B7.4.1 · Strand 4, sub-strand 1

Data

Collecting, organising, presenting and interpreting data.

  1. Lesson 1 · B7.4.1.1.1 · about 45 min

Choosing and Justifying a Method of Collecting Data

Before a market queen buys stock, a coach picks a team or a Minister announces a plan, someone must first gather facts. In this lesson you will learn the main kinds of data, the seven common ways of collecting it, and how to choose the best method for a question and explain why.

  2. Lesson 2 · B7.4.1.1.2 · about 45 min

    Designing and Using a Questionnaire

A questionnaire is one of the cheapest and most powerful tools for finding out what people think and do. In this lesson you will design a short, clear class survey form, carry out the survey fairly and record the answers neatly in a table ready for analysis.

  3. Lesson 3 · B7.4.1.1.3 · about 50 min

Tally Charts, Frequency Tables, Bar Charts and Pie Charts

A long list of numbers is hard to understand, but a tally chart, a frequency table and a good graph turn it into a picture anyone can read at a glance. Today you will organise raw data, draw bar charts and pie charts, and use them to answer and pose questions, just as newspapers and the Ghana Statistical Service do.

  4. Lesson 4 · B7.4.1.2.1 · about 50 min

Finding and Using the Mean (Average)

When your teacher says the class average was 62%, or a shopkeeper says she sells about 40 loaves a day, they are using the mean. In this lesson you will find the mean of a list of numbers and of a frequency table, and use it to solve problems such as finding a missing score.

  5. Lesson 5 · B7.4.1.2.2 · about 50 min

Finding the Median and the Mode

The median is the 'middle' value of a set of data, and the mode is the value that occurs most often. In this lesson you will find the median of data with an odd or even number of values and of a frequency table, find the mode, and decide which of mean, median and mode best describes a set of data.
