B7.1.3 · Strand 1, sub-strand 3

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Working with fractions, decimals and percentages, and moving between them.

  1. Lesson 1 · B7.1.3.1.1 · about 45 min

Benchmark Fractions as Decimals and Percentages

Shops at Makola advertise "50% off", your report card shows marks out of 100, and the weather man says there is a 0.3 chance of rain. All of these are fractions in different clothes. In this lesson you will revise fractions, learn by heart the decimals and percentages of the benchmark fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, fifths and tenths), and use them to compare quantities quickly.

  2. Lesson 2 · B7.1.3.1.2 · about 45 min

Comparing and Ordering Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Is 0.99 bigger than 0.977? Is $\frac{3}{8}$ more or less than 38%? Questions like these come up when we compare prices, exam results and sports statistics. In this lesson you will compare and order common fractions, decimals up to thousandths and percentages by changing them all into one form.

  3. Lesson 3 · B7.1.3.2.1 · about 50 min

Adding and Subtracting Unlike and Mixed Fractions

Half a loaf of bread plus a third of a loaf — how much bread is that? You cannot just add the tops and the bottoms! In this lesson you will understand WHY fractions need a common denominator before you add or subtract them, and you will add and subtract two or three unlike fractions and mixed numbers step by step.

  4. Lesson 4 · B7.1.3.2.2 · about 50 min

    Solving Word Problems with Fractions

Carpenters cut boards in feet and fractions of a foot, mothers share money between transport, food and airtime, and hikers measure how far they still have to go. In this lesson you will turn real-life stories into fraction sums, solve them carefully, and check that your answers make sense.

  5. Lesson 5 · B7.1.3.3.1 · about 50 min

    Multiplying Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Every time a shop at the mall gives 15% off, a bank pays interest on your savings or a recipe asks for three times $\frac{2}{3}$ of a cup of rice, someone is multiplying with fractions. In this lesson you will learn what multiplying a fraction really means, why the rule "multiply the numerators, multiply the denominators" works, and how to use it with common fractions, decimals and percentages.

  6. Lesson 6 · B7.1.3.3.2 · about 45 min

Finding a Fraction of a Quantity

Sharing money, sharing food and sharing work all need fractions of quantities: half of the lorry fare, $\frac{2}{3}$ of the class, $\frac{3}{4}$ of an hour. In this lesson you will learn a reliable way to find any fraction of an amount of money, a number of objects or a measurement, and to read fractions of a group from a graph.

  7. Lesson 7 · B7.1.3.3.3 · about 50 min

    Dividing Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

How many quarter-loaves can you cut from 3 loaves of bread? How much does each of 3 friends get if they share a quarter of a pizza? Both questions are divisions with fractions. In this lesson you will see what dividing by a fraction really means, learn why we "multiply by the reciprocal", and divide common fractions, decimals and percentages with confidence.

  8. Lesson 8 · B7.1.3.3.4 · about 45 min

    Dividing Quantities by Fractions

How many $\frac{1}{4}$ kg plates are in a 10 kg stack? How much juice does each learner get when $9\frac{1}{2}$ litres is shared by 38 people? If 12 learners make up $\frac{3}{8}$ of a class, how big is the class? In this lesson you will use division by fractions to answer real questions about money, objects and measurements, and learn to give answers that make sense.
